I thought it was time for a catch up on what I am up to currently as it has been a few months. As I am having a quiet ish weekend this weekend I had some time to recap.

Reading – I have just started listening to the Handmaid’s Tale on Audible at the gym. I am only a couple of chapters in because annoyingly my headphones ran out of battery when I was last at the gym but I am enjoying the book so far. I am also reading A complicated Kindness on my Kindle and looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Listening to – When we were at the Commonwealth Games they kept playing the song called Mountain by Generdyn. It’s one of those inspiring songs and very easy to listen to on repeat so I always hit that first when I play music on my iPhone.

Watching – There isn’t much on TV that I am watching but I have been watching a few shows on Netflix. I quite like the Netflix original shows Dynasty and Shadowhunters, they are both good shows to watch whilst doing something else. I have also watched the show Bondi Ink which is about a tattoo parlour in Bondi. Despite being a “reality” tv show it really does not seem very real! I’m not sure how they get business either as some of the things that go on don’t seem to be great publicity!

Celebrating – I am still pretty excited by the fact I completed the Gold Run at the Commonwealth Games.

I am also celebrating the fact I am now down 35kg overall on my weight loss goals! My aim is for about another 15kg with a view to review where I am at and whether I want to loose anymore and how much. It still blows my mind a bit when I think of the fact that I have got this far and what I look like now versus a year or so ago.

Considering – So far the Aussie and I have been pretty happy where we live. We have a small Queenslander style house which is close to the city and transport etc and hadn’t planned to move when our lease ends in June. However our landlord has told us he wants to put the rent up which we are not overly impressed with! We are not sure if we will be moving but have been checking out what is available in the area and have found a house we would be quite happy to move into. The Aussie is not sure about moving because he is self employed and working from home and is worried about the impact it would have on the business so we are just thinking it all through at the moment.

Wishing you a Happy Sunday!

Currently Five

I haven’t done a currently post since about 2015 so I thought it might be about time with currently five!

What I am READING: I am currently reading two books, The Guilty Wife by Elle Croft on Audible when I am at the gym and The Beautiful Ashes by Jeaniene Frost on my Kindle.

I have set myself the target of reading 10 books on the Goodreads Reading Challenge this year at the moment. I have read one book so far and usually get through a book in just under a month on Audible by listening to it at the gym so I am hopeful I hit and can increase my target this year.

What I am LISTENING to: We went to see The Greatest Showman last week and I downloaded the soundtrack as we were leaving the cinema. The film was beautiful and the soundtrack is so easy to listen to so I am listening to it a lot! I love This is Me which is sung by Keala Settle.

What I am WATCHING: I have finally managed to start catching up on the BBC series Call the Midwife on Netflix. I think I have two series to watch on Netflix and I’m not sure if I will then be up to date or if I’ll have to wait for new series to come onto Netflix. Its such a sweet series to watch.

I am also looking forward to Grace and Frankie’s new series which is released on 19 January.

What I am PLANNING: I am hoping we can make some plans to get out of the heat today as the forecast says the high is going to be 38 degrees and we don’t have any air conditioning at home.

What my FITNESS goals are: I have started my PT sessions again this week and my body is really feeling it. My Trainer has moved me on to barbell training now and I love that I am strong enough to lift the weights he sets for me and also that I am starting to see some signs of definition coming in my arms. I have a long way to go but I am excited.

I have also just signed up for the Mater International Women’s Day Fun Run on 4 March 2018 with Naomi. We have signed up for the 5km walk and I’m now just hoping that this intense heat starts wearing off by then.

I am due to participate in the Triathlon Pink event on 18 February 2018. I have been giving it some thought and have decided that I won’t participate in that event now because I am concerned about my current fitness level and having enough time to train. However as soon as it opens I will enrol for the Brisbane event which appears to be scheduled in October 2018 instead and then I should be in a better place for next years Triathlon on the Gold Coat.

What I am enjoying EATING: I have a pretty standard diet every day which included porridge made with almond milk and berries but have found that with the temperature increase that porridge is just not appealing. I am currently experimenting with a recipe for my breakfast smoothies.

I think I have the recipe about right now and have found that it keeps me full until lunch time which is perfect, especially after a work out. I will try and share the recipe when I love it.

Motivation to Work Out

September 24, 2017 by Vicky Leave a Comment

A few people have said to me “how do you motivate yourself?” with regards to my little weight loss journey. My response is usually “it is always hard but I have to do this” and it really is a bit of a battle. For weeks I had zero motivation and I was freaking myself out a bit thinking what should I do, I don’t want to go backwards again.

In the end I decided that I just had to get back into the routine I had in Darwin, it worked, I had motivation and I lost 20kg in weight.

Below are five things that make my work out routine a little easier.

Work Out Time

When we lived in Darwin I always went to the gym, came home and got ready for work. Then when we moved to Brisbane, the first gym I joined was near work which I thought would be so good but I couldn’t really justify going to the gym before work and coming home to get ready before work because it wasn’t practical. I tried going to the gym after work instead but I found it hard to get motivation.

I joined a new gym in Brisbane a few weeks ago and now I get up between 5.30am and 6am Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, get to the gym for 6am ish and work out between 35 and 40 minutes before driving home, having my shower etc. I also try to go to a Bootcamp style class on a Saturday morning as I find its a good motivator and means I do push myself and also aqua fitness classes on a Saturday morning as well.

Preparation

I also prepare for the next day, the night before. I will fill a bottle of water, make up my breakfast and lunch, pack my bag and lay out my work-out clothes, shoes, headphones etc and work clothes to make my morning before work as easy as possible. I then just pick up a bottle of water, my keys and headphones and walk out the door to the gym for a 6am start.

The Soundtrack

I used to listen to music at the gym, and that did work but I found I was getting bored of listening to the same music over and over.

I really love reading but can never find the time to sit down and read. On Groupon there was a deal for a 3 month subscription to Audible where you could download one book a month for three months and I had also recently read an article where a woman had started listening to Podcasts when walking and she found herself walking more and more so I thought I would give it a try and it seems to be working.

I also try to make sure that I only listen to the audio book when I am at the gym to give added motivation because I want to know what happens next.

FitBit Step Challenges

I have had a FitBit for some time now and quickly discovered the various daily, weekly and weekend step challenges. My step goal per day is 8,000, I know it should probably be 10,000 but 8,000 is achievable and I am also happy to hit the 10K mark.

I am also in competition with my friend who also has a FitBit. For a long while my lack of motivation meant I didn’t pose much of a threat in the step challenges. However re-finding my motivation has made it a bit more challenging and now I find myself walking as much as possible.

I may also fit the Meme which goes around about walking around the house to hit my step goal and/or beat my friend, especially close to midnight on the last day of the challenge.

Apps

I use a few different apps for my fitness routine, I dip in and out of some and use others every day.

FitBit – this is used daily to monitor my weight loss, record my steps and monitor my progress in the challenges.
MyFitnessPal – I have the basic version and use the App to record my food and water intake every day. The calories etc are then fed through to the FitBit App.
Lifesum – Like MyFitnessPal I use Lifesum from time to time to record my food and water intake every day. I found it onerous to use more than one App to do this but keep the App as I like the recipes.
Health – This is an Apple App. I don’t use it that often but have authorised it to pull health related data from my other Apps.
Record – I use this App to record my work outs. I can record the type, time and distance using this App and the data feeds through to Fitbit.
Strava – This App is used when we go on walks or hikes to track the distance, speed and incline of our walks. I have the premium version and it will also send a text message to your nominated friends or family which provides the GPS information to locate you if needed in an emergency.

I have a lot of the Apps linked so that the information in one will be available in the others e.g. my steps will show in MyFitnessPal and my diet will show in FitBit.

I am not a fitness expert and my email is not intended in any way to be fitness advice, the points listed are just things that work for me personally. I am also not sponsored by any of the businesses mentioned and am not promoting those services. I just use and enjoy using the projects as part of my fitness routine
