We recently paid a visit to Brisbane Open Air Cinema to watch the Emma Stone’s new movie called Battle of the Sexes.
We have been to a few open air movies at the Deckchair Cinema in Darwin and always enjoyed the experience.
The Open Air Cinema in Brisbane is located at a temporary venue on South Bank for the next couple of months. South Bank is a great spot to spend an evening and has parking as well as great transport access. We caught the bus in to the city and stopped at the Cultural Centre before walking down to the cinema.
We purchased our tickets online and I believe that makes them a bit cheaper. The tickets are also cheaper if purchased with an American Express card because the venue is sponsored by Amex.
Our tickets were $18 plus booking fee and that just gained us access to the venue. Once there everything is cashless and you pay with your bank or credit cards. You have to purchase a blow up lounger or sit on the grass as seating is not included in the entrance price. I couldn’t see anyone who had taken their own deckchairs but wonder if that would be possible. The cost of hiring a lounger using an Amex card was $10, I think it was a few more dollars for ordinary cards. You do get a free blanket if you have an Amex card but there is again a charge for regular cards if you want to hire a blanket.
When we arrived there was a DJ playing music and it was a really good mix of old and new songs and quite enjoyable to listen too.
You can purchase soft drinks, alcohol, ice cream as well as pizza pasta etc in the venue. We had very tasty pizzas followed by Ben and Jerry ice creams and a glass or two of cider.
We settled down on our loungers and the movie began. The sound and picture were great and the atmosphere was good. Unfortunately the movie broke down part the way through but they offered free popcorn whilst they were fixing the problem.
The free blanket came in handy as the evening chill set in and was very cosy and good quality.
All in all we had a great evening. The experience is probably a bit overpriced because you pay about $18 for a regular movie in the cinema but you don’t get the great atmosphere and views at the cinema. I would go again for a good movie that I really wanted to see for sure whilst it stays open for the next few months.
I also really enjoyed the movie. I didn’t know too much about Billie Jean King but I think they handled the story well from what I have read afterwards. Well worth a watch.
