My Favourite Photos from April

June 25, 2015 by Vicky Leave a Comment

As I’ve been a bit AWOL from my blog for a month or so I didn’t get an opportunity to post my favourite photos from April. I took quite a few photos on my DSLR this month but I am saving them for some posts in the coming weeks but here are my photos from my iPhone.

My Favourite Photos from April

1) A bit blurry but this photo was taking at the sailing club at sunset. It’s always nice to see the boats out in Fannie Bay because they tend to leave for the wet season because of the weather and they move back when the dry season starts.

2) This photo was taken on our Yellow Water Cruise when we visited Kakadu.

3) Another Kakadu photo this time of the highway heading down to the escarpment. The view was stunning and I made the Aussie stop quite a few times to take photos of it.

4) This little grasshopper guy was sat on the bonnet of our car and promptly launched himself off of it when I tried to take photos.

5) Another coffee time spent with one of my lovely friends. I can’t work out how they make the patterns and my coffees taste yum but look terrible.

6) Kakadu featured heaving in my pictures from April and this photo was taken at the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre.

7) April was of course Easter and this bunny was a gift from my boss at work and he was delicious!!!

8) Sunset view from our balcony – it really never gets old for me.

9) This is a weather guide/predictor which was at the Bowali Visitor Centre in Kakadu.

10) Finally a tower at the end of the highway which lead to an escarpment.

My Favourite Photos from February 2015

Wow another month is done and even though it was a slightly shorter month it still seemed to fly extra quick. Looking through my photos from the last month it does look like my month was more active than food orientated at least!

Here are my Favourite Photos from February 2015

My Favourite Photos from February 2015

From L-R top row
We had a fantastic night watching Passenger in concert this month. Definitely one of my favourite concerts this year.

Sunsets, it’s hard to get fed up of sunsets and we get pretty spectacular sunsets almost every night here.

I was really pleased to receive some flowers from one of my clients at work last month. I know it’s my job to do my best for them but it’s always lovely to receive thanks when someone is happy with your work.

This isn’t really a favourite photo but I couldn’t believe how big this giant moth type bug was when I found it sat on my wing mirror on the car. We’ve spotted a few giant bugs on our car when we park it in the car park for our apartment so it seems it might be the place to be.

I discovered this month that I am miscellaneous in the student sense at least. Getting myself enrolled was very frustrating but we got their in the end and I’ve now got my first weeks worth of reading (amounting to a small tree) to read and prepare for my lecture this week and seminar this week, which is obviously why I am writing this blog post now!

This next picture is from one of our sailing trips in February. I love the setting for these houses right on a marina and would love to live in a location like this. Not so keen on the sand flies that live there too and try to eat you alive around sunset!

I had a lovely day with my friend and her son experiencing the celebrations for Chinese New Year and the coffee was enjoyed during a delicious breakfast at one of my favourite Darwin restaurant’s called Moorish.

Anchors Away! Another gorgeous sunset and I just liked the setting with the anchor which is mounted right next to the beach. The “photographer” in me couldn’t resist the photo.

This lion visited my friends office for Chinese New Year to bless it (and us a bit). It was a really fun and interesting experience.

This photo was taken at the same time as my recent Silent Sunday post on one of our sailing expeditions. It was a pretty stormy afternoon and we did enjoy a heavy rain shower but it was still fun and really made me want to learn how to sail in the next few years.

This final picture is from our sailing trip too and shows the mangroves just as we left the creek. I called the picture paradise on Instagram and I think that’s a pretty good description of the view we had that day.

Laneway Cafe

November 17, 2014 by Vicky 2 Comments

Over the weekend the Aussie and I paid a visit to Laneway Speciality Coffee Shop in Parap, Darwin for some lunch as we had heard great things about the food as well as the coffee that they serve there. Darwin’s not really known for it’s coffee shops and so Laneways is quite popular.

On their Facebook page they say that their main focus is on specialty coffee, simple fresh food and family friendly service. The sourdough is organic and baked fresh daily and the sweets cabinet (which was filled with gorgeous looking cakes) is where you will see their naughty side!

It was tough deciding what to eat because the choices all sounded delicious but the coffee was an easy choice and I opted for a latte which tasted really good and was not expensive when you consider how much, not so great coffee costs in Darwin!

The Aussie and I both ordered the Wagyu Burger and I added bacon to mine!. The burger was delicious as was the filling and I would definitely order that again because it was really tasty and I think great value for money, especially as we were still full from lunch in the evening and didn’t need dinner! Even better we realised later in the day that an old school friend who recently moved to Darwin from the UK was our Chef and so we will be popping back soon to say hi to her.

There were also some specials available and so I tried the very tasty Raspberry, pomegranate and lime soda and the Aussie tried a Vanilla Guerilla milkshake which was in a huge milkshake cup and he wolfed down so quickly I couldn’t even get a picture so it must have been good! Mind you he is a milkshake fiend and that his drink of choice if it is on a menu!

I loved the way that the place was decorated with old thrift shop style objects like old glass milk bottles, tins from milk powder for storing knives and forks and old style scales up by the till.

I’m not a big coffee drinker normally but I did really like the atmosphere in Laneway’s. The service was fantastic and you felt like you were really well taken care of. My only regret was that we were too full to try one of the cakes on sale but next time they are definitely on the list!!!

Changing Tastes

I hardly drank coffee when I was in the UK it would always be tea unless we popped to Starbucks at lunchtime.

Since I’ve been in Australia and started work I seem to have developed a slight addiction to coffee! After lunch I feel a lull in energy and a coffee seems to make all the difference, although of course that could be the lunch I just ate (usually soup which is weird when you think its really quite hot outside).

I have even bought these coffee bags which are like tea bags but full of coffee goodness so that I can have a good cup of coffee just how I like it!

There’s a couple of cafe/coffee shops right opposite my office and some days I think just a little mocha would pick me up but I’m trying not to waste money and my mocha is $5.50 and I could buy a whole days worth of good for that if I’m careful and pre plan my meals!

Add to that the fact that the girl in the shop starts making my mocha as soon as I walk in the shop so it’s ready when I pay makes me think I need to cut back!

Has anyone else found that your tastes change when you spend time abroad?
