MS Moonlight Walk

October 21, 2018 by Vicky Leave a Comment

After the extremely wet Bridge to Brisbane that we did a few weeks ago, seeing the weather forecast of rain on Saturday 6 October 2018 which was also the date of the MS Moonlight Walk did make me think oh no, particularly as I had felt ambitious when I signed me, Naomi and the Aussie up for the walk and had signed us up for the 10km walk rather than our usual 5km.

The walk didn’t start until 6pm so during the day we watched the clouds roll in as well as a touch of rain before heading to the Cultural Centre to meet Naomi.

Upon arrival we picked up our red lanterns and waited for the walk to start whilst feeling the rain get heavier and heavier. Luckily I had bought some rather fetching rain ponchos so we were able to avoid getting quite as drenched as for Bridge to Brisbane.

The event got off to a lovely start with presentations to the top fundraisers as well as listening to people who have MS talk about how they are fighting to beat MS.

With the sun going down we started on our walk along Southbank and the long and windy, sometimes up and sometimes down hill path to the Story Bridge, which if it is possible to have a favourite bridge would 100% be my favourite!

We walked along pathways and roads which we have never been to or along before which was lovely and to be honest the rain didn’t really dampen the experience for me. It was also lovely to see the volunteers along the route, pointing us in the right direction and from time to time handing out things to keep you going like water, bananas, cookies and yoghurt.

As we came back through the botanic gardens at the 9km mark we were dazzled by the beautiful lights which are in the trees all year round. It was “just” a short trek back to the finish line.

I have never walked as much as 10km in one go before. I remember back when I started exercising how walking 3km used to hurt my hips and I would be in pain for a while afterwards. The most I had walked in one go had previously been 5km but recently I have been walking 7 then 8km on the treadmill at the gym and felt comfortable doing so.

The thought of completing 10km still made me nervous though and I won’t lie that I thought, well if it gets tough we can probably just do 5km. Luckily that wasn’t necessary and we did it and it was a really great experience, especially as I was able to raise some money for the MS Society as well and completed it with the Aussie and Naomi.

We have signed up for a 10km walk on the Gold Coast next year already and have a longer walk in mind when the tickets go on sale on New Years Day around Byron Bay as well which makes me quite excited for the fitness goals next year.

My June Faves

July 18, 2018 by Vicky Leave a Comment

A bit later this month but these are my favourite photos from June.

1. & 2. Both of these photos were taken on a walk / run at the park near our new house.

3. This was taken on the New Farm Park Run. It was our first time trying this venue and I really enjoyed the route and our usual weekend debrief.

4. I went on a walk with Naomi, our lovely American friends and a lovely friend they had visiting from Germany to Whites Hill. It was a great walk with some good hills to go up and down. I loved that I could breath pretty normally as we went up and down the hills and my recovery was really quick.

5. It seems exercise was the theme in my photos as this photograph was taken just before I started the Park Run at Wynnum. I have to get up about 5am to get to the Wynnum Park Run but I never mind because this view greets me as I arrive and I also get to do my weekly debrief with Naomi. Its a fantastic way to start the weekend.

6. On the 23rd the Aussie, Naomi our American friends and their friend from Germany went to a Winter Solstice Festival. This photo was taken during the lantern parade on our way to the bonfire.

7. The day after the Solstice Festival Naomi and I visited the Yoga Festival. I had never tried yoga so this was a good opportunity to see if it was something I would want to try again and it was. I was surprised by how strong I actually am and I definitely want to keep on doing the yoga.

8. As you know my family visited at the beginning of the month so I sent them this picture to show them that I had made up the spare bed after it was delivered for their visit.

9. When I did Park Run I entered a prize draw which was run by Dulux. Just after we got home I had a call to say I had won the prize which was a pretty much life size Dulux dog! It took a while by the dog (now named Dudley) was delivered to our house at the end of the month and he is causing hours of entertainment!!!

Park Running

June 27, 2018 by Vicky Leave a Comment

For the last few months I have been participating in Park Run most Saturdays with Naomi.

Park Run is a fantastic free event where you can walk or run 5km with a bunch of like minded people. It begins at 7am or 8am depending on the location on Saturday mornings in towns and cities across the world which means a fairly early start usually depending on which Park Run we choose to visit.

It can be a bit intimidating to actually go and get started at Park Run especially when, if like me when I started, I was only able to walk the track, but when you get there you quickly realise that there isn’t anything to worry about, everyone is lovely and you feel very supported.

I also used Park Run as part of my training for when I participated in the Commonwealth Games Gold Run and it definitely helped me get a bit quicker so that when I did the the Gold Run I managed a pretty good personal best for me.

My current PB is 44 minutes 38 seconds. We try and walk the track with intervals at the end of the track so I am feeling pretty positive that my time will get better and maybe under 40 minutes at some stage soon whilst I build up to running more of the track.

I’m now up to 12 Park Runs in total. I understand that when we get up to 50 runs we will be sent a t shirt by the organisers which is pretty cool and a great way to celebrate that kind of achievement.

My Week Day Morning Routine

October 22, 2017 by Vicky Leave a Comment

My week day routine is always pretty much the same, although Wednesday is usually my rest day so I will try and wake up a bit later. I usually get everything ready the night before so my gym and work clothes as well as breakfast and lunch are ready to go.

On a week day morning my routine looks a bit like this:

5am – my alarm goes off. Most of the time I do wake up on the first alarm, although the Aussie will confirm that from time to time it does go off two or three times!

5am – 5.30am – I get ready for the gym, brush my teeth, grab my water, headphones and car keys before driving down the road to the gym.

5.30am – 6.30am/6.45am – I work out in the gym. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday I do my own thing or what my PT sets for me and on Friday I train with my Personal Trainer.

6.45am – 8am – I come home, weigh myself (I do it every day, I know that’s not a good thing but its a habit now), take my vitamins, have a protein shake and some water and shower to get ready for work.

8am – 8.10am – I pack my breakfast and lunch in my bag and head out of the door for work. I drive to work, which is a 10 minute drive from our house.

8.30am – I start work at 8.30am and work until 5pm most days. I eat my breakfast at work usually. When work is busier I try and arrive at work between 7.30am and 8.30am and so will just speed up my getting ready routine after I finish at the gym.
