We love this event which funnily enough runs on the first Sunday of the month! It starts at 2.30pm until 6(ish)pm and runs at the PINT Club in Darwin.
Now the dry season is apparently here (it was supposed to start on 1st May but that rain has kept on falling) it will be even better because it can get a bit hot sat outside listening to the music in the afternoon during the wet season.
They start off with a house band who play some songs whilst waiting for other people in the audience to sign up to play during the afternoon. It is always worth arriving for this because the music is good and they play really well together.
However, the beauty of the event is that every few songs the organisers put together a temporary band of people who have often never played together but they will for example need a bass guitar for a certain singer or a drummer. Sometimes the artists don’t even know the song so watch each other play and then pick up and away they go! It may be that a singer wants to sing a particular song and so they put them a band together to perform it.
It’s a big collaboration but almost everyone sounds pretty amazing even though they haven’t played together much before.
Also you don’t always just get blues music so there is always a bit of variety to what is played and sung just in case you aren’t such a big fan of blues music. My favourite group is called Hokio and they play a mixture of all sorts of music from Bruno Mars to proper blues.
We have even had people from out of town come along and on one afternoon Jarvis Cockers father Joe Cocker got up and sang and was fantastic. You also find that some artists will be playing a gig at a venue in Darwin over the weekend and will pop in to get up and play some music which is pretty cool.
We really enjoy this event and will look forward to it on a weekend when it is on. We’ve only missed a couple since I arrived in Darwin and it’s always scheduled in the calendar for each month as a reminder!
