Random Seasons

April 14, 2014 by Vicky Leave a Comment

On Saturday I went shopping to try and find some linen trousers for work. I like wearing them as their cool when your walking around the city but also look smart enough for work.

A few weeks ago when it was Summer here they were everywhere and of course I didn’t want to buy any. Now it’s almost Winter the Summer clothes have all disappeared to be replaced by Winter clothes and the only trousers I can find are the heavy plastic looking/feeling type of trousers which are somewhat perfect in places where it’s not so warm over the Winter. Here in Darwin though the temperature will stay above 20 degrees C so I really want linen trousers or at least some trousers made of a better material.

It’s a bit frustrating walking around some shops in Darwin really because it’s fairly obvious that the chain stores don’t think about the differences in weather between Darwin and say Melbourne this time of year.

I have seen woolie hats, scarves and gloves in the shops here as well as thick looking jumpers and tops which are totally inappropriate for Darwin but obviously the shop has decided this is it’s new stock for Winter so every shop in Australia will get it never mind whether it’s needed.

Winter Woolies

So far it seems like it might prove to be difficult to buy clothes for the Winter here some times.

So now as with most things you want to buy in Darwin like electrical equipment I will have to look online and will probably order some trousers from the UK to be sent here as luckily the Spring/Summer clothes will be coming in to the shops there now and with companies like ASOS and New Look they will deliver here for a very low delivery charge so it makes it worth it.

It is a shame that shops don’t actually think about their target audience when selecting clothes but let’s hope I really don’t need to buy a woolie hat for Winter as well!

DIY Confusion

April 13, 2014 by Vicky Leave a Comment

The Aussie has a boat and has been working on getting it ready for sailing this weekend between our other plans.

He needed to get a new drill bit as his broke when he was using the drill apparently, so this morning we paid a visit to Bunnings which is a massive DIY Superstore in Australia.

I’ve been there with him before and it seriously baffles me that there can be quite so many drill bits, types of wood or even glue! Someone I know told me they had spent 4 hours in Bunnings one weekend choosing paint, crazy I tell you!

So we went to choose a drill bit, well he did whilst I laughed at the number of men stood in the aisle choosing their purchase for the day. I thought I had taken a photo of this but it doesn’t seem to have saved to my phone.

Here is the display the Aussie got to choose from, how on earth do you choose!?! I suppose it’s like a man walking in to a store and trying to decide which shampoo to buy maybe!

The Aussie selected his bit, a 22mm apparently, and away we went stopping off at the sausage sizzle on the way out!

Man Shopping

March 7, 2014 by Vicky Leave a Comment

… not shopping for a man as in buying them a present which can be stressful enough when you live with the man who has everything, but shopping with the man for their clothes!

It’s been a busy few days with another trip to the local Camera Club where I got second place in the themed competition which was blue for this photo which I was pretty pleased with

Dragon 167/365

Today I managed to drop my iPhone and pretty much shatter the screen before it was even 6am (I knew it was a stupid idea using it as a torch to go to the loo) and won’t be able to get it fixed until the middle of next week so we decided to pop to Casaurina Square after work which is a pretty big mall in Darwin so I could get one of those screen cover things and avoid more bits falling out, water getting in and also getting more splinters from the glass.

When we got there the Aussie decided he wanted to look for new shorts and some casual shoes for wandering around in which I didn’t mind as I quite enjoy a wander around the shops to feed my shopping habit.

He has very specific requirements for his shorts because he wears them to work and fills the pockets up with the bits and bobs he uses when he is out in the field working. I managed to track down what looked like the ideal pair with extremely deep pockets and even a belt but they apparently weren’t quite right!

Maybe these?

Ah well he found the shoes he wanted and the hunt for the perfect shorts continue! I got the screen cover I needed to protect my phone for a bit even if I was terrible at applying it and think I have found someone who won’t charge me the equivalent of a gold bar for repairing it and may even get a discount, fingers crossed.

We finished our shopping expedition with some yummy Thai food for dinner (that looked like the photo below which is from this website. I am starting to really love eating Thai food too.

It looks like we are going to have another jam packed weekend this weekend with some more sailing and also a girlie night out (for me) with my friends from work. It’s time to experience Darwin Night life and to get dressed up for some dinner and dancing!

Blessed by a Lion

February 16, 2014 by Vicky Leave a Comment

Yesterday (Saturday) I had a bit of a hectic day as I had lots planned all for one day.

My day started off by driving in to work to see the office being visited by a Lion from the local Chung Wah Society to do their traditional Lion Dance.

The Lion Dance is believed to scare away evil spirits and brings good luck, joy, fortune, and happiness. It is often performed at the openings of businesses, religious festivals, cultural ceremonies, and special occasions, but mostly can be seen during Chinese New Year celebrations.

I really enjoyed watching the dance and it was also fun watching them in different locations around the city as they visited local businesses and residences to do their dances.

After that I went for a coffee and croissant with one of my friends from work and a bit of a wander around the shops where I somehow managed to resist buying anything!! We also spotted the Lion out and about.

I also popped to the cinema to watch 12 Years a Slave which was an amazing but very sad film based upon the true story and book by Solomon Northup. This is a book I am definitely going to read soon.

Finally after a quickish trip back home to pick up the Aussie I went to watch my first ever AFL foootball match in Australia which was played between St Marys and Wanderers.

I was supporting St Marys and they won with a score of 145 to Wanderers 35 so it was a really good game to watch!

The Aussie was trying to teach me the rules as they played so I also learnt something and will understand a bit more about what is going on next time I see a match!
