We are very lucky in our new house to have a bigish garden (yard?) full of big trees so sitting on our balcony at the back of the house we have a pretty nice view.
There aren’t any fences on two sides of the garden, so it isn’t very practical for having a pet and that amongst many reasons, including the fact my dog Henry is living with my parents and wouldn’t do so well travelling here mean we aren’t getting a dog any time soon.
But alas! The Aussie has made friends with the two Australian Brush turkeys who visit our garden daily, well we think its the same two as about a month after we moved in we spotted one sadly dead on the road just across from our house so we may have two new turkeys or the same two who aren’t going anywhere soon because the Aussie feeds them, every day. I wondered why the leftovers from our plates weren’t going in to the bin and then discovered it’s because they get left for the turkeys.
Apparently the males rake up leaves into a massive pile where they incubate the egg and will add or take away leaves and vegetation to make sure it is the perfect temperature for the babies. Then when born the babies are left to their own devices. I am looking out for the nests!
As far as I know they haven’t been named by the Aussie but they don’t wander far and seem to have no concerns about sharing the garden or being in close proximity with us.
On Saturday night we had our American friends over for dinner and out of the corner of my eye I saw something moving between the roof of the house and top of the balcony. The crows fly close to the house so I thought it must be a bird but turning on the light we discovered it was a very friendly possum who kept reaching out as if he or she wanted a hand down to join us!
We are very conscious of how unclean they can be so didn’t help or touch him but he kept coming back to join us until he climbed down on the bannister railing when we decided tea inside maybe in order!
He/she has been named Harry the Possum, obviously, and I anticipate more visits as we use the outdoor area more as it gets warmer!
